Reasons Why You Must Maintain Your Sump Pump
Before your sump pump breaks down and you find yourself online searching for sump pump reviews read this!
If you are wondering why you must maintain your basement sump pump, maybe this will help you. The reason why you should have a sump pump and why you should keep it nice is for any flooding that may occur. Even though it might not do anything for most of the year, once the snow is melting or it starts raining heavily, you could expect that it will jump into action and keep your basement from flooding. The pump should discharge the water to the house's yard and not the sanitary sewer, etc.
To maintain your sump pump you must first check the float. It is one of the most vulnerable parts to it. The float rises with the water that is in the sump pit, which then triggers the pump to pull water out of the pit. To make sure the float is working properly, pour some water into the pit. If the float rises and the pump activates and then turns off when you remove the water, it works.
The second thing you should do is clean the pit. Debris gets into the pit every now and then so you should remove any lose items that may be found in the pit every so often.
The third and fourth thing you should do is test the check valve and clean the impeller. To test the check valve, pour water into the pit and if it doesn't trigger the pump and remove the water then it needs to be replaced. For cleaning the impeller, unplug the pump and disconnect it from the piping. Then remove the pump from the pit. Disassemble it to get to the screen and impeller. After that, remove any debris, reassemble, and put the pump back.
The last thing you should do on the list is check the electricity. If it doesn't look like it is working at all, check the electrical connections. Make sure it is plugged in correctly and check the circuit breaker. Look at the ground fault circuit interrupter if it is connected to one, as these things sometimes trip. Then press the reset button on the GFCI. If you think that the electrical supply seems fine, then you probably will need to replace your pump.
So if you have a sump pump, be sure to inspect it on a regular basis to keep it up and running because who knows when you might need it next. This way you will have the best sump pump maintenance procedures keeping your pump in great condition for many years.
